Abstract

The development of autumn sugar beet cultivation in susceptible areas of the country is a suitable solution to increase sugar production. To investigate the effect of planting and harvesting dates on the yield of three sugar beet cultivars, a study was conducted in the 2022-2023 growing year at the Gonbad Kavos Agricultural Research Station. A split-split plot experiment was carried out based on a randomized complete block design (RCDB) using four replications. Planting date is the main factor in five levels (2nd October, 17th October, 1st November, 16th November, and 1st December) cultivar is a sub-factor in three levels (Monatunno, Rosagold, and 061) and harvesting date is a sub-subfactor were investigated at three levels (10th June, 6th July, and 1st August). Rosagold was better than the two other cultivars with sugar content and white sugar content of 15.6 and 12.4%, respectively. A delay in planting caused a reduction in the bolting. A delay in planting also reduced root yield, sugar yield, and white sugar yield due to a shorter growing season. Across all varieties and planting dates, delays in harvest dates reduced white sugar yield. Monatunno cultivar can be used for early planting in the plain and lowland regions of Golestan Province without the negative effects of bolting on yield. Also, Rosagold which had a higher white sugar yield than other varieties, can be recommended from the planting date of October 17 onwards.
